Poetry Online is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization committed to making literature and art accessible to everyone. We welcome submissions from writers around the globe writing primarily in English. Our platform accepts traditional and experimental forms of poetry, visual poetry, and cine poetry. For each poem accepted, we offer a payment of $60 USD upon publication. Additionally, we publish chapbooks to further showcase the works of our contributors.

Guidelines:

Poetry Online has no strict style or theme. We accept both poetry and visual poetry, traditional and experimental. For an idea of what we enjoy, read our journal.

  • For written poetry, we ask that you submit 1-5 poems in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format. There is no line limit.
  • Visual poems and cine poetry/video art may be submitted in additional imaging formats, including .png, .jpg, .mp4, and .m4v. If you are unsure your work fits into the visual poetry category, we encourage you to visit the online magazine ctrl + v for examples—or Poetry Foundation/"Visual Poetry Today" for an introduction to the genre. We do not wish to limit the genre, but believe this might be helpful. If you’ve got it, please don’t be shy to send us experimental writing.
  • Please include a 400-character-max author bio. Place this in the designated field on Submittable — not inside your document, please.
  • We are now reading submissions of reviews & interview pitches. Send a brief pitch, or summary, directly to us at our contact form, here.
  • We accept simultaneous submissions. But please be aware we respond very quickly.
  • We accept translation submissions under all categories.
  • All work accepted after 10/01/2022 will be compensated at $60 per poem.
  • At this time, we can only pay by Venmo or PayPal.
  • For previously unpublished poems, we ask for First North American Serial Rights (FNASR). TLDR: We get to publish your poem first, one time, in North America, then publication rights revert back to you. We also ask that you provide permission for us to reprint your poem, in print or online, for a future Poetry Online anthology.
  • We read submissions year-round.
